Welcome to the Eurozone!
Year 5 Language Event at Warden Park
By Sarah Brocklehurst
Nearly 300 Year 5 children from 15 local primary schools visited the Warden Park "Eurozone" in early June.
The languages block at Warden Park was transformed into a colourful European street scene for the duration of the Eurozone, complete with a border control point at which the children had to hand over their "passports" for stamping!
Once in the Eurozone Warden Park languages teachers, ably assisted by enthusiastic Year 10 students, taught the children some simple words and phrases in Spanish or German. At the end of each session the children, armed with their newly acquired vocabulary, took part in a role play in which they bought items from a market stall set up in each classroom.
Feedback from our young visitors was tremendously positive, with comments including; "it was the best lesson ever", "it was wicked" and "now I want to go to Germany because I know lots of words!"
We are all looking forward to Eurozone 2010!
